Successful opening weekend between sunshine and strong winds
- Offringa & Paré Win the Single Eliminations
- Erpenstein and Köster in 4th and 5th Place
- Full Promenade at Brandenburger Beach
- Freestyle and Slalom Could Start on Monday
(Sylt) The first weekend of the world’s largest windsurfing event had it all – spectacular wave action on Saturday under traditionally challenging Sylt conditions, and bright sunshine and a full promenade on Sunday. A successful start for the Citroën Windsurf World Cup Sylt, which offered everything for windsurfing, event, and Sylt fans.
Yesterday, Saturday, the 40th edition of the event started directly with the king discipline in the competitions. In “Wave,” the men and women took turns starting from the early morning hours, trying to achieve the best scores in the waves of the cold North Sea. From a German perspective, for five-time world champion Philip Köster, after a solid start, it was over in the quarter-finals against Frenchman Antoine Martin. The current world number one, Lina Erpenstein, was eliminated in the semi-finals against Spaniard Kiefer Quintana, a fellow competitor for the world title. The happy winners of the so-called Single Elimination were Marc Paré from Spain and Sarah-Quita Offringa from Aruba. Paré, who delivered a very strong performance to secure his first Sylt victory, was overjoyed: “I can’t believe it, this is such a special event for me and it’s great to win the Single Elimination.” In the women’s competition, Offringa, a 24-time world champion, prevailed in the final against Kiefer Quintana and summarized: “In Sylt you never know what you’re going to get, so I’m very happy with this result.” Of course, she was referring to the once again unpredictable conditions that make Sylt so unique and can sometimes cause despair. Third place in the small final was achieved by the only 14-year-old Sol Degrieck from Belgium, who had brought Offringa to the brink of defeat in the semi-finals. Lina Erpenstein finished fourth. In the men’s competition, Marcilio Browne from Brazil finished second, Victor Fernandez from Spain finished third. Philip Köster finished fifth.
Whether it will also be a World Cup victory on Sylt for Offringa and Paré will be decided in the coming days. A Double Elimination, in which everything could be reshuffled, will only take place if conditions are right. Then perhaps again with all the chances for the German sailors.
Freestyle and Slalom Could Start on Monday
Tomorrow, Monday, the conditions currently look promising for the start of the Freestyle discipline. Lennart Neubauer from Bremen, Sylt winner from 2023, can be crowned Freestyle World Champion for the first time at this year’s Citroën Windsurf World Cup Sylt. After the 20-year-old shooting star sensationally became vice world champion on the North Sea island last year, he is now going into the race as the top favorite for the title. First possible start here at 09:30 am.
The entire top ten of the world rankings will also be on the water off Westerland in the men’s slalom. Michele Becker from Kiel comes to Sylt as the current seventh and, like Nico Prien (#11), will do everything to challenge the current top seeds. In the women’s slalom, the German Alisa Engelmann can calculate chances of victory. As the current fourth in the ranking, she is only behind Justine Lemeteyer (#1, FRA), Marion Mortefon (#2, FRA) and Blanca Alabau (#3, SPA). First possible start in the slalom at 10:00 am.
