(Sylt) Spectacular sporting competitions and the best entertainment for visitors – that was the schauinsland-reisen Windsurf World Cup Sylt presented by got2b this year as well. From a German perspective, particularly pleasing: the sensational second place of Maria Behrens from Lübeck (G-209) in the king discipline of Waveriding. The podium place at the world’s largest surfing event is the biggest success in the career of the 21-year-old student so far. In the final, she was only beaten by the Frenchwoman Marine Hunter. Lennart Neubauer from Bremen provided the second German sensation with his victory in Freestyle. The 19-year-old, who lives in Naxos, also became vice world champion in this spectacular discipline. The Belgian Yentel Caers was crowned the new world champion in Freestyle.
There was also great joy at Michele Becker, who won his first race on the PWA World Tour in the first elimination in Slalom and finished a very good sixth place overall after eight eliminations. The victory in the Slalom went to last year’s winner from Sylt Amado Vrieswijk (Bonaire). Due to the weather conditions, the Wave competition for men could not be finished. Only the first round with all 32 windsurfers was held and scored, so that there are now 16 first-place finishers in the final result, including the two Germans Julian Salmonn and Leon Jamaer. A rarity, points and prize money will now be divided by sixteen.
The ten action-packed days on Brandenburger Beach traditionally ended this Sunday afternoon with the official award ceremony. Despite pouring rain, a large number of spectators came to the beach to celebrate the winners of all disciplines in style. Around 200,000 spectators came to Brandenburger Beach in Westerland over the event days. In addition to the action on the water, numerous stands, pop-up stores and a wide range of gastronomy invited visitors to World Cup Village on the promenade. The evening parties in the event tent were also legendary.
Organizers and Sponsors Draw Positive Conclusion / Date for 2024 Set
“”A unique combination of world-class sport and top-class entertainment: The Windsurf World Cup is and remains a great figurehead for Sylt. We are already looking forward to the 40th edition of this unique event next year,”” says Jörg Elias, Event Manager of Insel Sylt Tourismus-Service GmbH. The date for 2024 can already be noted: From September 27th to October 6th, the world’s largest windsurfing event will once again take place on the North Sea island.
This year, the renowned water sports event bore the name of the Duisburg-based company schauinsland-reisen for the first time: “”A great event at one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Germany. We are very pleased to have been part of this extraordinary event this year,”” says Martin Bensing Carvalhal, Deputy Head Product & Contracting at schauinsland-reisen.
On the agency side, the event has been repositioned this year: For the first time, the Cologne-based agency MMP Event was responsible for the schauinsland-reisen Windsurf World Cup Sylt presented by got2b. The Cologne agency, an experienced organizer of major sporting events and event agency of the Seven. One Entertainment Group, took over the conception, implementation, marketing and communication of the event in a long-term cooperation with the ACT AGENCY from Hamburg. “”A big thank you to everyone involved, to the ISTS, our sponsors and partners for the cooperative partnership and the trust. And of course thank you to all the athletes and visitors who made these ten days so special,”” says Christian Okon, Managing Director of the organizing agency MMP Event.
