- First Decisions in Slalo
- Nico Prien in 6th Place / Søe and Lemeteyer Dominate
(Westerland) Spectacular racing on Sylt! The first decisions in the Slalom competition were made today at the Citroën Windsurf World Cup 2024. In difficult conditions, the absolute world-class field of men and women took to the wave-rich water since early morning. Frequent crashes and waves from all directions made the race difficult to control for the sailors, who have to maintain full control while hovering a meter above the water at high wind speeds if they want to score successfully.
From a German perspective, Nico Prien, currently No. 11 in the world rankings, had a good start, finishing the first three race series with a strong fifth and two solid seventh places. At times with high race speeds, Prien managed to fight his way into the finals in all competitions and keep up with the absolute world leaders. In the overall event standings, the 29-year-old is currently in sixth place: “Consistency plays a very important role here. The goal is to continue to reach the finals,” said Prien, who still has every chance of reaching the podium. Dane Johan Søe gave a dominant performance. The 21-year-old shooting star was able to win two of the three races and now leads ahead of Italian Bruno Martini and Frenchman Nicolas Goyard. Michele Becker from Kiel, currently No. 7 in the world, finished ninth in the first race and is in 19th place overall.
In the women’s competition, Justine Lemeteyer from France was in a different league today, winning four of the five races so far! Accordingly, she currently leads the field ahead of Marion Mortefon from France and Blanca Alabau from Spain. The German Alisa Engelmann is in seventh place overall after the first day.
How many more race series will be held in Foil Slalom depends on the conditions in the coming days.
Depending on the weather conditions, the “Freestylers” will also start the competition tomorrow. First possible start here 10:30 am.
